Computers for Cameroon
Gift from Canadian Community - This is a joint program of TechCeFaCos NGO (Cameroon & US), and Irishcrows African Foundation (IAF) Canada with the generous support of the entire Canadian community. Donated ICT equipments are serviced, programmed and shipped to promote and enhance sustainable development in African countries. Do you know how old are the computers being used now in Cameroon? They date back to the mid-1990s. In the computer world things change so rapidly. A lot of the computers over there will not run programs such as Windows Vista or Windows XP.
Why throw away landfill-bound computers when somewhere around the world others can use them? There are also toxic substances in computers such as lead and mercury so it is not good for our environment to just throw them away.
TeleCentre
The central focus of this intervention is to set up a centre with low cost technology to serve rural communities in Cameroon with basic ICT public services and social security service delivery as a means for bridging the digital gap and promote the concept of e-democracy. "Shishárshe" (the art of poverty reduction strategy) - We encourage the use of computers, multimedia tools as well as ICTs for providing technical support and micro credit. Doing so will also provide everyone some learning opportunities for basic computer literacy and further the training for specially-talented youths.
We provide a model of basic computer literacy among communities as well as among academic and educational Institutions.
We also install educational software about HIV prevention and agricultural practices.
TeleMobile
We create a mobile team of IT experts with portable IT equipment and toolkits to serve rural communities and schools with special ICT services and establish a flexible data entry system of information and communication. 95% of the sub-divisions in Bui Division are rural communities in great need of digital links!
Computer scarcity in rural communities is a big problem. To alleviate this and other associated problems, we work to ensure that all rural students are computer literate as well as open to modern working atmosphere and socioeconomic opportunities.
TeleLink Initiatives
By utilizing and exploiting telecom techniques we aim to develop an information and communication system for gathering, validating and updating community development issues on agriculture, health, HIV/AIDS and to share through SMS, Voice Mail, ITM etc. In particular we provide and coordinate access for Telephone Conferences and an integrated technological approach towards information and communication access for community development.
Schools Twinning Links
We promote ICT in education by equipping and connecting schools as one for the sharing of ideas/knowledge among teachers-teachers and students-students.
Edutainment (the arts of joyful education) - We promote and make education interesting and lively by encouraging the use of interactive and multimedia tools as well as online facilities in order to empower pupils and students with creative and technological knowledge.
We also donate books, CDs, radio cassettes and other instructional programs to various schools and libraries in the community.
ICT Empowerment Project
We organize workshops and trainings for representatives of institutions, NGOs, etc on the importance of technology initiatives in the development process.
We also provide practical case studies on project strategies for interventions with the goal of increasing the use of technology in rural communities.
IT School of English Cameroon
We enhance IT professional training of able youths after they complete their basic training program which is coordinated at the TeleCentre ICT Resource Laboratory department.
TeleAgro and Portable Community Centres
